Dental awareness has increased over the past decade rapidly. Every 2nd minute, we are exposed to a tooth paste or brush commercial. We have articles on dental decay, pyorrhea, orthodontic treatment etc. in every paper and magazine. So does brushing teeth destroy dental problems?
Why is it that children today have more decay and complaints? Blame it on the chocolates and fizzy drinks, say the parents. Well think again. Is it our fault that we bought it for them in the first place, or is it the fact that in the busy span of lifestyle today one does not have time to identify the rationale behind a simple step of tooth brushing!!!
Tooth brushing is, in a dentists vision at least, the most abused practice adopted by the people. Sadly, the dentist prefers to reap benefits due to this fact. Thus goes the dentists advice, clean your teeth once in 6 months professionally!! People are aware that a cavity formation is to be filled, bleeding gums need to be treated, and oral hygiene needs to be maintained. But does anybody know that brushing is not to be done only on the teeth alone?
Our teeth are rough, and after meals some amount of food is retained, called as debris, a normal physiological process. If left undisturbed for over 10 hours this will calcify and form tartar/ calculus and cause increased bacterial concentration resulting in the destruction of the supporting structures of the tooth. The most common areas where debris accumulate are the junction between the gum line and the tooth on the inside and outside surface, or on the chewing surfaces.
Tooth brushing is to be started at the gums below/ above the tooth, one jaw at a time. This is to squeeze out bacterial products and debris from the gums outside as well as to massage the gum to stimulate the blood flow. If the health of the teeth and gums are maintained, the defense mechanism automatically improves leading to a better quality of life. Flossing is recommended when gaps are present between the teeth. It is the right of every patient to ask their dentist to demonstrate the brushing techniques
So its time to ask yourself…. DOES TOOTH BRUSHING MINIMISE YOUR VISITS TO THE DENTIST....????
